James M. Zornes

James Milford Zornes was born in Camargo, Oklahoma in 1908. He was a painter and a designer. Studying with F. Toles Chamberlin and Millard Sheets from 1935 - 1938, he was also a student at Otis Art Institute in 1938 before training at Pomona College in 1946-50. On the faculty of Otis from 1938-46, Pomona 1946-1950 and the University of California at Santa Barbara from 1948-1949, Zornes was also an official army artist during World War II. In his own words, he is “an abstract realist“ in “transparent watercolor and other media. Zorne's work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the White House in Washington D.C.,the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, the Academy of Design in New York City and many other collections all over the country. The winner of numerous awards throughout a long career, James Milford Zornes lived in Mt. Carmel, Utah, like Maynard Dixon, until his death.
