Students Who Need A Laptop

University of Utah students who need a laptop sent to them, should email Union Services Desk with their name, UNID, phone number, and mailing address. A library laptop will be mailed out within two business days.

WiFi Access & Mobile Hotspots

Xfinity WiFi locations are currently free to access, and Xfinity Internet Essentials is free for 2 months to qualified customers. If you are a student registered for summer courses and would like to request a mobile hotspot for use during summer semester, please submit your contact information.

Accessing Collections

Our collections are available online or through home delivery. Search our catalog for electronic and physical resources. If the item you are interested is available as an electronic copy, the e-version will be supplied to you in place of the physical copy. Email us with the title, author, and year of publication of the item(s) you are interested in. Physical requests will be sent out every Friday.

Checked Out Materials

We have pushed the due date on your items out and will continue to adjust if necessary. If you have left the state and are not returning in the fall, please let the circulation team know and we will work out a way for you to return them.

All technology items, such as laptops and hotspots, are currently on loan through the end of summer semester.

Books and other items also have extended due dates. Check your email for specific extended due dates on the items you have checked out.

Research & Instruction Support

We will continue to support requests for new electronic materials to be added to course reserve during the closure period, and we will be able to fulfill requests for document delivery electronically during this period as well. If you have questions, please contact mlib-reserve@lists.utah.edu regarding course reserve or Rick Anderson regarding interlibrary loan and document delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Marriott Library is temporarily closed. While the building itself is unavailable to visitors, you can still get help and access library services and collections remotely. When we know the reopening date of the building, we will post it on the Marriott Library website.

When will the library reopen?

We do not yet have a timeline for opening; we continue to work with the campus administration on a plan, but we probably won’t have an answer until June. When the library does open, it will almost certainly do so in phases, opening up to students and faculty first and to the general public later.

As soon as we have concrete information about the library’s opening timeline, we will post it on our website.

How can I get software assistance?

If you have a need for a specific software, please submit a request for MAC or Windows.

What services can I access virtually?

Virtually all of our journals and databases are available remotely and can be accessed using the same methods as always. All of our ebooks are also available remotely. Thanks to the HathiTrust archive, roughly half of the books in our print collections can also be read online during the COVID-19 crisis. For information about how to use this service, visit Hathi Trust User Information. For help with HathiTrust, use our Help resources.

How can I return library books/DVDs while you are closed?

The Marriott Library’s exterior book drop is available at the Level 1 entrance adjacent to the Campus Store. If you have left the state and are not returning in the fall, please let us know and we will work out a way for you to return them.

How can I return library technology while you are closed?

At this time, you may return the laptop/hotspot to the University Union Services Desk Monday - Friday from 9 am - 5 pm. If you have graduated or have left the area, we will send you a pre-paid shipping label to you via email so that you can package and return the items. Please email our Shipping and Receiving Coordinator so that he can coordinate the label and get you some information about the return process.

How can I get a hold removed from my account while you are closed?

The circulation team is available and will work with you to resolve any outstanding issues on your account.

How can I use the physical circulating collections for research?

If the item you are requesting is available as an electronic copy, the e-version will be supplied to you in place of the physical copy. Email us with the title, author, and year of publication of the item(s) you are interested in. Physical requests will be sent out every Friday.

How do I access Government Documents?

Our electronic collections are available for faculty, students, and staff of the U. At this time, community access to government materials is restricted. Contact Shane Wallace for more information.

How can I obtain material the library doesn’t already own?

Email to suggest-a-purchase. We will purchase scholarly items needed for research and learning. We will purchase an electronic format of the item if it’s available and print format if no viable electronic format is available. You will be notified how to access the electronic format or, if the item is in print, it will be sent to your home as quickly as shipping options allow.

Where can I print?

Currently the computer lab in the Union is open and there is a printer available for use there.

What if I have questions? How can I get help?

The Marriott Library team is available via Chat to answer your questions or assist you in locating materials. Chat hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am – 7 pm and Saturday, 12 pm – 5 pm.
