Peter Fillerup was born in Cody, Wyoming in 1953. His sculptures are generally of western and religious subjects. He lives in Wapiti, Wyoming.
Fillerup's father, Mel Fillerup, is an artist who encouraged his son's talent. Peter Fillerup first studied at Ricks College in 1972 and then at Brigham Young University where he received an Art Award scholarship in 1976. He also apprenticed with Avard Fairbanks with whom he traveled to Italy where he learned the art of enlarging models to historic sizes, working with marble, and foundry technique.
One of his noted works, Kit Carson, Frontiersman (1981), was produced in three sizes. The largest size was produced in heroic scale for the Whitney Museum in Cody, Wyoming. Another noted sculpture is Porter Rockwell, The Enforcer (1978) depicting a figure prominent in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Biography adapted from Artists of Utah.
Born in Cody, Wyoming, the artist now lives in Wapiti, Wyoming. He is one of Avard Fairbanks most gifted students; he also studied at Brigham Young University in the mid 1970s. Fillerup creates in both bronze and stone and is increasingly well known for his western and religious subjects. This artist's major commissions include a marble Christ for the Bible Art Center for Dallas, Texas and a Monument to Kit Carson in the Memorial State Park in Taos, New Mexico. A resident of Heber City, Utah, Fillerup worked on monuments for Grantsville, Heber, and Salt Lake City during a career prolific in the production of pieces both large and small. In fact, the Salt Lake City Commission supported the idea of creating five life size groups to be erected on parkland north of the L.D.S. Church Office Building.
