ProtoSpace Sewing Tables  Numbered Sewing Stations

ProtoSpace has five styles of sewing machines, piecing tables, a steam iron, dress forms, and sewing notions available to University of Utah students, faculty, and staff only. There is no cost to use these resources. Please contact us, if you have questions.

  • Janome HD 3000 standard sewing machines (4)
    • General purpose sewing for most fabrics and projects.
    • Users must provide their own fabric and thread.
    • First-come, first-served.
    • Full specifications.
  • Janome Memory Craft 550E Embroidery Machine (1)
    • Machine embroidery with hoop sizes up to 7.9 x 14.2 inches.
    • Users must provide their own fabric and thread.
    • First-come, first-served.
    • Full specifications.
  • Juki TL-15 Quilting Machine (1)
    •  Semi-industrial straight-stitch machine for quilting, piecing, and heavy fabrics.
    • Sews up to 1,500 stitches per minute with adjustable speed control.
    • Drop feed for free motion quilting; automatic thread trimmer.
    • Users must provide their own fabric and thread.
    • First-come, first-served.
    • Full specifications.
  • Juki MO-2800 Serger Machines (2)
    • 2/3/4 thread overlock machine, produces seven stitch types.
    • Jet-air threading and automatic needle threader for easy setup.
    • Adjustable differential feed and easy rolled hemming.
    • One is pre-threaded with white. One is pre-threaded with black.
    • If you want to use your own color thread, please contact us in advance.
    • First-come, first served.

  • Sailrite Ultrafeed LS-1 (1)
    • Heavy-duty sewing for canvas, sailcloth, upholstery, and other thick materials.
    • By appointment only. Please contact us to schedule an appointment.

Hand-sewing kits will be available for purchase in ProtoSpace starting in late-summer 2026.

Vinyl Cutter

ProtoSpace's vinyl cutter is available on a first-come, first-served basis to University of Utah students, faculty, and staff.

US Cutter MK2 vinyl cutter

  • USCutter MK2 Cutting Plotter
    • Designed to cut a variety of vinyl materials and thicknesses.
    • There is no charge to use the vinyl cutter, but users must provide their own material.
    • For best results, we recommend sheets 8” x 10” or larger.

ProtoSpace has a growing variety of resources for hand crafting.

Our hand-crafting tools and supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis to University of Utah students, faculty, and staff only.

Button Maker Machines

We have two button maker machines.

American Button Machines offers a great How to Make a Button tutorial (including a video and illustrated guide).

We sell button making kits!

  • Each kit comes with enough shells, pinbacks, and clear mylar sheets to make 10 buttons.
    • 1-inch kits are $2
    • 2.25-inch kits are $5
  • Kits can be picked up at the ProtoSpace during Help Desk hours.
