About the Apiary
The Apiary: Advancing the University of Utah’s Research Data Infrastructure is a pilot project funded by the VPR’s Incentive Seed Grant program to improve and expand research data management support for the University of Utah.
What is Research Data Management?
Research data are the evidence that supports your research conclusions. They can take many forms from numeric measurements traditionally understood as “data” to text, images, code, audiovisual materials, archival collections, or other records, depending on the discipline. Proper data management ensures that the primary researchers, their collaborators, and others can locate, understand, interpret, and verify this evidence.
Research Data Management (RDM) is the practice of organizing, storing, preserving, and sharing research data throughout the research lifecycle. It involves:
- Everyday management during the project (e.g., consistent file naming, clear documentation).
- Long-term planning for what happens after the project (e.g., depositing data in a repository for preservation and access).
Why Manage Your Research Data?
Effective RDM practices can help you:
- Increase research efficiency
- Improve research integrity and reproducibility
- Make your research outputs more visible and citable
- Enable collaboration within and across disciplines
- Comply with funder, publisher, and institutional policies
How We Can Help
From planning and organizing files to finding and sharing research data and meeting funder or publisher requirements, we can help. We’ll work with you to ensure your data are FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
The goal of the Apiary is to support students, faculty, and researchers at every stage of the research data lifecycle. In addition to our events series , we offer research data support services, including data preservation and sharing through The Hive , DOI minting, data access support, data visualization training, consultations, and more.
