Rare Books Collection
Material Use Guidelines
- All rare book collections material is the property of the University of Utah. Reproduction or redistribution of this material is forbidden without the express written consent of the head of the division or the curator of the Rare Books Division, Special Collections, J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah. Adding links to the library’s web pages is permitted and encouraged.
- Rare book collections material does not circulate and must be used in the Special Collections Reading and Reference Room.
- Photocopies of rare book collections material are provided on an item-by-item basis, depending on the condition of the item, as determined by the head of the division or the curator of Rare Books. Photocopying may only be done by the staff of the Rare Books Division. The cost is $0.50 per page.
- Digital scans of rare book collections material are provided on an item-by-item basis, depending on the condition of the item, as determined by the head of the division or the curator of Rare Books. The cost is determined by the Digital Technologies division, which invoices the patron for the service.
- No photocopying, photographing, filming, or scanning of rare book collections material is allowed without written permission from the head of the division or the curator of Rare Books.
- Any one-time, non-exclusive use of images of rare book collections material for publication, exhibition, or other purposes requires written permission. A fee of $50.00 per image per use applies unless exceptions are agreed upon by the Assistant Director of Special Collections, the head of the division, and/or the curator of Rare Books.
- Materials and/or images used for publication, exhibition, or other uses must be credited as follows: Rare Books Division, Special Collections, J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah.
- Two copies of the book, periodical, film, video, or any other work using material from the rare book collections must be provided to the library.
- The library does not claim copyright control for materials in its collections. Responsibility for clearing reproduction rights lies with the publishing party. The library provides no information on copyright holders; securing such rights is the user’s responsibility.
- The user agrees to indemnify the University of Utah and related parties against any claims arising from the use of rare book collection materials.
