3D Printing and Scanning

The Marriott Library offers 3D printing services to University of Utah students, staff, and faculty as per the 3D Printing Policy.  We have a variety of 3D printers and provide detailed 3D printing instruction and support in-person and via remote consultation.

Questions related to 3D printing can be directed to our team via email, or phone support is available Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm.

All online print jobs use Marriott Library filament. No personal filament or color choices are accepted.
Print cost is $0.05 cents per gram.

Payment Options
There are three ways to pay for prints: 

  • Credit or Debit Card
  • Print and Carry P.O.
  • eJournal

Please note that only online payments are accepted. No in-person or phone transactions are available.

If you have questions about tax exempt payments please contact us.

Bring your own 1.75mm PLA or PLA+ filament and work hands on with the Prusa printers. The printers are located in ProtoSpace on level 2 near the orange columns.

The Marriott Library has several 3D scanning options available for students, faculty, and staff. Support for 3D scanning projects is limited, so plan your work in advance and coordinate with our team early.

  • Artec Spider 3D scanner
    • Useful for small- to medium-sized objects
    • Working distance of 24-30cm (8-12 in)
    • For use with Artec Studio Professional software
    • Able to capture geometry and texture data
    • Accuracy down to .1mm
    • Full specifications
    • By appointment only - please contact the 3D printing team
  • Artec Eva 3D scanner
    • Use for for medium- to large-sized objects
    • Working distance of 40-100cm (10-36 in)
    • For use with Artec Studio Professional software
    • Accuracy down to .2mm
    • By appointment only - please contact the 3D printing team
  • iOS Lidar 3D scanning with iPad Pro
    • Lower resolution, but able to capture large objects and rooms.
    • Able to capture geometry and texture data
    • Check out iPad Pro from Marriott Library Knowledge Commons
    • Use Scaniverse app from the App Store to create 3D scans
  • Additional equipment:
    • Boom arm for mounting 3D scanner
    • Rotating platform for capturing multiple angles

Objects which are translucent, glossy, matte black, or fuzzy/hairy generally won't scan easily. Consider powder coating shiny or translucent surfaces with loose or sprayed on powder. Talcum powder, dry shampoo, or 3D scanning powder products are easily accessible, but not provided by the Library.
