3D Printing and Scanning

Marriott Library offers 3D printing services to University of Utah students, staff, and faculty as per the 3D Printing Policy.  

We have a variety of 3D printers and provide detailed 3D printing instruction and support in-person and via remote consultation.

3D Printing: Online Submission

Make sure to watch our "Getting Started" video!

All online submission prints will use white PLA filament. No personal filament or color choices are accepted.

Submit a 3D Print Job

Costs and Payments

Print cost is $0.10 cents per gram. You will receive an email invoice when your online submission has been validated and is ready to print.

There are three ways to pay: 

  • Credit or Debit Card
  • Print and Carry P.O.
  • eJournal

Only online payments are accepted. No in-person or phone transactions are available.

3D Printing: In-Person Submission

Bring your own 1.75mm PLA or PLA+ filament and work hands on with the 3D printers located in ProtoSpace, in suite 1705 near the level 1 entrance.

In-person printers are first-come, first-served.

The Marriott Library has several 3D scanning options for students, faculty, and staff. Support for 3D scanning projects is limited, so plan your work in advance and coordinate with our team early.

  • Artec Spider 3D scanner
    • Useful for small- to medium-sized objects
    • Working distance of 24-30cm (8-12 in)
    • For use with Artec Studio Professional software
    • Able to capture geometry and texture data
    • Accuracy down to .1mm
    • Full specifications

  • Artec Eva 3D scanner
  • Artec Micro II 3D scanner
    • Automated desktop scanner for small objects (up to 20 x 20 x 15cm / 8 x 8 x 6 in)
    • One-click workflow. Built-in rotating platform scans objects from all sides
    • For use with Artec Studio Professional software
    • Able to capture geometry and full-color texture data
    • Accuracy down to .005mm (5 microns)

  • iOS Lidar 3D scanning with iPad Pro
    • Lower resolution, but able to capture large objects and rooms.
    • Able to capture geometry and texture data
    • Check out an iPad Pro from Marriott Library Knowledge Commons, OR Use Scaniverse app from the App Store to create 3D scans
  • Additional equipment:
    • Boom arm for mounting 3D scanner
    • Rotating platform for capturing multiple angles

Objects which are translucent, glossy, matte black, or fuzzy/hairy generally won't scan easily. Consider powder coating shiny or translucent surfaces with loose or sprayed on powder. Talcum powder, dry shampoo, or 3D scanning powder products are easily accessible, but not provided by the Library.

3D Printing Policy

  • Access

3D printers are available for use by University of Utah students, faculty, and staff only.

Self-use printers are available on a first-come first-served basis.

  • Use

    The library's printers may not be used to create material that is:

    • Prohibited by local, state, or federal laws Prohibited by University Regulations or in violation of Library Patron Policies & Responsibilities.

    • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.

    • In violation of intellectual property rights.

The library's printers must be used consistently with manufacturer's specifications and with posted approved material.

  • Fees

    Students, faculty, and staff will be charged by weight of print when using library-provided material. Additional fees may be charged for use of specialty printers.
