The Simple Video Studio is offline while we make upgrades and move to a new location! 

We expect it to be available for usability testing in early Fall 2026 and a relaunch after Fall Break.

The Simple Video Studio is a self-scheduled, video recording space that requires no prior media production experience.

• Located in ProtoSpace on Level 1, room 1705E.
• Available only to University of Utah students, staff, and faculty with a valid uNID.
• Hours:
  • Available to all users whenever ProtoSpace is open.
  • Available to certified users after hours.
• Equipped with:
  • HD video camera on a motorized lift.
  • Shotgun (omni-directional) microphone.
  • Three-point studio lights.
  • Gray, white, black, and green backdrops.
  • Presentation/teleprompter monitor.
• Export to your University of Utah-affiliated cloud storage (UBox and GCloud) drive.
• Simple Video Studio must be reserved to use. Reservations are limited to one hour per day.

Reserve Simple Video Studio

Possible video projects include:

• • Online instruction / flipped classroom videos.
  • Recruitment, training, or conference presentations.
  • ePortfolio materials.
  • Practicing public speaking skills.
  • Audition reels.
  • Oral history interviews.
  • Video podcasts.

Basic Instructions

1. Close the door for better sound containment.
2. Choose your color background.
3. Adjust the height of the video camera using the mechanical lift controls on the front (east) wall.
4. On touch screen, press "Turn On Lights" button for the studio lighting. Then, turn off the overhead room lights using the wall switch.
5. On the touch screen, press the “Start Recording” button.
6. Give your presentation.
7. On the touch screen, press the “Stop Recording” button.
8. Wait for the .mp4 file to write to your Flash Drive.
9. Remove Flash Drive.
10. Turn on room lights. Then use the touch screen to turn off the studio lights.
11. Leave the room door open.
