Carolyn Ann Coalson was born in Ohio in 1939. As one Utah's leading painters of abstraction, she creates paintings with delicate layers of paint. She lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Coalson studied in California at Santa Monica City College from 1965 to 1966, and at DeAnza College in Cupertino. She began study at the University of Utah in 1976 where she earned her BFA and MFA. Canto (1996) demonstrates her skill in layering paint on paper. Undersite (1990) is another example of her work.
Coalson won a Utah Arts Council Purchase Award for 21 April. She has also exhibited at the Springville Museum Spring Salons in 1992, 1997, and in 2004. Two of her paintings Tell Me If You Can and Untitled '85 are included in the Utah State Art Collection. She is a member of the Utah Watercolor Society.

Carolyn Ann Coalson (1939-), is one of Utah's finest painters of abstractions. Originally from Ohio, this artist went to school in San Bernardino, Santa Monica (City College), and Cupertino (De Anza College), California, before study at the University of Utah began in 1976, where she earned a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. Coulson won a Utah Arts Council Purchase Award (Utah '85), and has shown her work at Whitmore Library, Phillips Gallery, the Salt Lake Art Center, and Waking Owl Book Company since 1974. It is the ongoing process of painting that provides this artist's greatest joy. She is a master of rich, delectable paint application, consistent and yet with endless subtle variety. Coalson is a member of the Utah Watercolor Society.
