Thomas Moran was born in Lancashire, England in 1837. A landscapist who painted the Rocky Mountains and west coast scenes, Moran influenced many Utah painters. He died in Santa Barbara, California, in 1927.
Moran immigrated with his family to Philadelphia in 1844. His early artistic training consisted of learning the basics of oil painting from his brother, Edward, and being apprenticed to an engraver while he was in his teens. When Moran was in his twenties, he returned to England for more study.
In 1871, Moran traveled with the Ferdinand Hayden expeditionary party to the Yellowstone region. He painted his first major work, The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (1872), from a photograph taken while he was on this expedition. His watercolor, Old Faithful (1873), was used to encourage Congress to pass legislation that Yellowstone should be preserved as a National Park.
Biography adapted from Artists of Utah.
Thomas Moran (1837-1926), the famed California-based itinerant artist, influenced a number of our local landscape painters and also worked here upon occasion. A painter and a printmaker, Moran was an Englishman by birth, who had arrived in America in his teens. Taught the rudiments of oil painting by his brother, Edward Moran, Thomas returned to England in 1862 for further art study. Discovering the genius of J.M.W. Turner's painterly atmospheric studies there, Moran thought more in terms of the broad brush in later years than most of his Hudson River/Dusseldorf-oriented contemporaries did. Yet his philosophical attitude toward the landscape is linked more closely to an Albert Bierstadt-like panoramic view. Often in Utah in his prime to paint in the Wasatch Range (1872-75, 1900), Moran became acquainted with Harry Culmer and undoubtedly some other local artists as well. The work of this nationally celebrated painter, which evolved in the 1870s especially, became a prime stylistic fountainhead for interesting regional landscape development. He painted in Springville Canyon on one occasion.
