Virtual reality services
Virtual Reality
Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive simulation experience.
Marriott Library offers a range of equipment and support for VR within ProtoSpace and at the Knowledge Commons desk on Level 2 for checkout.
In ProtoSpace
We have two types of VR headsets within ProtoSpace. They are located on portable carts and can be connected to large-screen monitors within the space so groups can view what the person wearing the headset is seeing.
Staff are available to consult with users who would like to explore VR for teaching, learning, and research applications.
Valve Index (tethered)
The Valve Index is a VR headset tethered to a PC workstation, which handles the graphical rendering and processing, giving users a high-fidelity visual experience. The Index uses external sensors (base stations) placed around the space to track the user's physical location and body movements. The playing area is restricted to the length of the tether and pulley system.
Meta Quest 3 (wireless)
Unlike the Valve Index, the Meta Quest 3 is a wireless, battery-powered VR headset, which allows the user to wear the headset in any open, indoor area but with lower graphical rendering and processing capabilities. Cameras built into the front of the headset track the user's physical location and body movements. Users establish their own play area boundaries, but it is recommended to have distinctive, stable marking on the floor to improve tracker orientation.
