Technology equipment is available to students enrolled in courses. Equipment will check out for 120-days, 60-days, 30-days, or 7-days depending on the item. Items with limited inventory will check out for 7 or 30-days.

All loans for Staff, Faculty, and University Affiliates are limited to 24 hours.  Renewal of equipment can only be done in-person at the Knowledge Commons desk with the item present, and if there is no waitlist for the item.

How to get equipment

You can check out equipment at the Knowledge Commons desk on Level 2 during open hours. You can call ahead to verify availability.

Alternatively, you can submit an online equipment request for home delivery or for in-person pick up at the Level 1 Library Information Desk. Online requests are monitored Monday through Friday, 8 AM - 4 PM, and hold requests are filled for available items each weekday morning. You will be notified when the item(s) are ready to ship or be picked up. Items stay on hold shelf for 7 days.  7-day items and some large or heavy items are not eligible for home delivery.

Laptops cannot be renewed. Patrons must return their laptop before they are able to check out another laptop. Students can back up their files on box.utah.edu, which is 1TB of free online storage for all University of Utah student, faculty, and staff.

All other equipment can be renewed only if we do not have a waitlist for them. If there is a waitlist or you do not get a renewal confirmation, return the item by its due date to avoid late fees. FAQ

How do I install software on a laptop?

Select software can be installed by opening Self Service (Mac) or Software Center (Windows). If you are using Software Center off campus, you may need to connect to the VPN first. A list of currently available software can be found here: Available Software.

Why am I unable to log in to a laptop?

Typically you need to be on campus the first time you log in, using your uNID and password. After the first login, you can take the laptop off campus and use the same credentials to log in again. If you have a Windows computer, you can follow instructions to log in off campus.

Why is an item not checking out for the full 7, 30, 60, or 120 day period?

If you have not enrolled in classes recently, your library account may be scheduled to expire, in which case your loans won't check out past the expiration date. All staff and faculty loans are limited to 24 hours.

How do I return equipment by mail?

You can request a return shipping label online.
