Web Editor Responsibilities & Standards

Training

Editors are required to attend or arrange trainings with the User Experience & Web Development team when needed.

New accounts

Supervisors must request a new account through the Library Websites e-ticket. Training is required before an account is issued.

Web Standards & Best Practices

To ensure cohesion and accessibility standards throughout the library’s website, the following guidelines must be adhered to. See also, Best Web Practices.

Text

  • Keep content up-to-date throughout the year, and participate in the annual website content review each summer. Reflect current department, service, and collection names; locations; contact information; and terminology (e.g., “Usearch” rather than “Primo”, “Horizon”, or “library catalog”). Ensure that links use "Log in" rather than "Sign in", "Login", etc.
  • Remove redundant or outdated content. If a page is deleted, open a “Library Website” e-ticket so that any links to that page can be removed.
  • Ensure that all links are current and working. User Experience & Web Development can provide a list of broken links by request.
  • Write content in compliance with the University Brand & Style Guide. Ensure that content is clear, consistent, concise, inclusive, and appropriate for the audience (e.g., avoid library jargon).
  • Use links with descriptive text for accessibility compliance (e.g., not “click here”). Hyperlink text, do not use exposed URLS, (e.g., Marriott Library not "http://www.lib.utah.edu")

Images

  • Ensure that all images are copyright free, used in compliance with their license, or used under fair use (see Permission Free Resources). Ensure that the library has a Model Release Form on record for any identifiable individuals in photos. The Marriott Library Flickr stream is also a good resource for images.
  • Ensure uploaded images are no more than 72 dpi (maximum quality for the Web).
  • Create meaningful and descriptive alternative text for each image, or empty alt tags when appropriate (design elements without content or images with redundant text labels).

Video

  • To embed video on the Marriott Library website: Upload content to the Marriott Library official Youtube channel (submit an e-ticket to Library Website) and embed videos on the desired page(s).
  • Embed videos using Components > Youtube video embed.

Styles

  • Do not override default styles.
  • Use standard font sizes and styles (e.g., use Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. for headings).
  • Use default colors, including hyperlinks, headings, and text.
  • Remove all Word formatting, which overrides default styles and affects accessibility.
  • Ensure that "Contact Information", when present, is kept in the top right corner of the page. Contact information is required for all service or service desk related pages.
